4. Lane Doesn’t Judge Rory For Sleeping With Dean

Season 5, Episode 1 “Say Goodbye to Daisy Miller”

Rory sleeps with Dean. At the time, Dean is married to Lindsay (Arielle Kebbel). And when Lorelai finds out she isn’t happy. She accuses Rory of being “the other woman”, which she isn’t wrong about, but Rory will have none of it. She is angry at Lorelai for making her feel bad about the situation (and mostly because her mother is right). Of course, Rory goes to Lane for advice about the whole messy situation.

Lane is excited about the prospect of Dean and Rory getting back together even though she knows about Lindsay. Lane listens and gives advice, while remaining supportive of Rory’s decision. Unlike Lorelai she doesn’t yell or tell Rory that what she did was wrong.

Having sex for the first time is a big deal. Sleeping with someone who is married is an even bigger deal. Rory knows what she did was wrong, but there is nothing she can do to take it back. Lane doesn’t judge Rory. She provides her with a safe place to process her feelings. Lane not shaming Rory about sex is so important in this moment. It is what Rory needs to hear. Even when Lane decides to wait until she is married to have sex she never questions Rory’s desire to sleep with Dean and later, Logan. These women support each other in all aspects of life, no matter how messy they get.
