Leslie Knope – Parks and Recreation

Why She’s Awesome: Do you know how many times during this election year that I’ve wished Parks and Recreation were still on the air? A lot. Mostly because I need a big-hearted political comedy to offset the queasiness. But also, who doesn’t wish they could vote for Leslie Knope?

Leslie is one of the greatest female characters in recent memory. She’s fierce, feminist, hard-working, and she really, really cares about making the world better. Forget apathy; Leslie made sincerity cool again. And imagining her joy when, God willing, another blonde lady reaches the White House? That’s enough to get me through.

What You’ll Need: If you care about matching hair color, you might want to invest in a blonde wig. Otherwise, all you really need is your best job interview clothes! Some sensible shoes, dress pants, and a blazer are all staples for Leslie. Her creativity comes through in her fun, colorful dress blouses. And to really clinch your costume, consider a “Knope 2012” button!

Next-Level Move: Pawnee Goddess Leslie! The uniform for the Girl Scouts-like group that Leslie created herself is simple to recreate. Some purple fabric can be easily made into a Pawnee Goddesses vest, even if you can’t sew – just hot-glue the hems and you’re good! Use adhesive felt to craft your own badges and tie a green bandana around your neck. Throw on a purple t-shirt and some jeans to fully embody Leslie at her most feminist.
