40 Celebrities We Need To Keep Safe From 2016

How can I say this without sounding ghoulish…you know what? There may not be a way, so here goes: I don’t want George R.R. Martin to die before he finishes writing A Song of Ice and Fire.

Yes, it’s selfish and kind of creepy to feel that way, but it’s the truth. Martin has been writing his seminal fantasy book series since the 90s. There are fans who have been following the adventures of Tyrion, Daenerys, Jon Snow, Arya, Sansa, and the rest for 20 years, long before HBO turned the books into Game of Thrones. And in that time, Martin has grown from a middle-aged man to one on the precipice of old age. At 67, he’s not ancient, but considering how long it takes him to write one of his books, he’s old enough to raise a few alarm bells.

And there’s me sounding ghoulish again. I just want Martin to have the time he needs to make the remaining two (or however many) A Song of Ice and Fire books as good as they can possibly be. And in any case, I don’t want to lose a man with an imagination capable of conceiving of Westeros and its many inhabitants. As a novelist, Martin can keep transporting us to new worlds for decades to come.
