9. “We are the FINAL FIVE!”

Four years ago it was the Fierce Five. In ’96 we had the Magnificent Seven. Team nicknames for women’s gymnastics is nothing new, so everyone sorta wondered what nickname this team would earn. The announcers for the Olympics, Al Trautwig, Nastia Liukin, and Tim Dagget, had guessed it might be The Fab Five. That would make sense, if the alliterative theme would stick (heh- get it? Stick?). And no one could argue that these five- Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas, and Madison Kocian- aren’t fabulous.

Turns out, the team had an idea of their own. They kept it a secret, though, until the moment they clenched the team gold in Rio. In tandem, after the final scores went up, they screamed into a gaggle of TV cameras, “WE ARE THE FINAL FIVE!”

Why the final five? Well, Martha Karolyi, the national team coordinator for US women’s gymnastics is passing the torch after this year, so this team is literally her final team- the final five women to have been chosen and coached by her in preparation for the Olympics. Also, in the next Olympic games, the teams will be comprised of only 4 women. So they are the last of an era in more ways than one.
