10. The Netherlands Sanne Wevers wins Gold at Balance Beam finals

Coming into this Olympic season, there was really only ONE name in everyone’s ears- Simone Biles. Professionals and critics of the sport said Biles could have walk away with five of the six women’s medals up for grabs in Rio. So when Simone fumbled on the beam and put her hands down- a full point deduction– a new name quickly emerged as a leader, and it wasn’t the other Team USA qualifier on the event, Laurie Hernandez. As unlikely as it seemed, a Team USA woman would not take home the gold- The Netherlands’ Sanne Wevers would.

Sanne was the rightful winner if Simone couldn’t clench. Her beam routine was full of mind-boggling spins and mesmerizing, fluid dance-like movements that we don’t often see in USA powerhouse gymnastics, and was a breath of fresh air. It was a beautiful and unforgettable performance.

In the end, Wevers (Netherlands) took gold, Hernandez (USA) took silver, and Biles (USA) took bronze. Yes, even with a full point deduction and serious balance-check, Simone still landed on the podium. But the underdog ended up becoming beam queen, an upset that I don’t think many people are all that upset about.
