Yellowjackets brings us back to the dangers of the wilderness in season 3 trailer
With the release of the trailer for season three of Yellowjackets, Showtime offers a glimpse into the continuing horrors of how far this soccer team will go to survive.
From the earliest moments of the series, Yellowjackets teased that inevitably, the girls would go from average high school students dealing with terrifying circumstances to embracing their situation to such a degree of enacting rituals, masks, and outfits. While seasons one and two have teased the beginning of these events, such as how season two introduced the beginning of the use of cannibalism and utilizing the queen card to choose a victim of the hunt, season three goes deeper into how the lore originated.
The season three trailer is all about upping the ante as if things have not gotten complicated enough in both timelines.
In the adult timeline, Shauna, Taissa, Lottie, Misty, and Van are dealing with Natalie's death, which tragically occurred at the conclusion of season two. Simultaneously, there is a new threat approaching that risks destroying everything they have built to remain silent about what truly occurred in the wilderness.
The idea that the survivors have to rely even more heavily on each other, even with the amount of tension that may exist between them, suggests plenty of exciting character dynamics. But what does Callie's request to know the truth about what occurred mean for Shauna and Callie's mother-daughter relationship, which has always struggled to retain a strong emotional closeness?
However, while things may be picking up again in the adult timeline, the teen timeline remains thriving in chaos, mayhem, and disturbing survival techniques. The tension between Natalie and Shauna may be coming to a head as the trailer suggests that Natalie's reign as the group's leader may be shorter than expected. However, given that there appears to be a time jump in the timeline due to the lack of snow, season three may have chosen to move more quickly through time to show the group going further down the rabbit hole. Shauna, who has lost so much between Jackie's death and her son being stillborn, may be one of the quickest to have lost her humanity, especially added to her resentment that Lottie chose Natalie to lead the group.
Jackie's influence over Shauna is strong in both timelines, as their relationship, a mixture of love, hate, and co-dependency, plays an integral role in Shauna's emotional arc. Although Jackie had only been a constant character in season one, her presence as a ghost, or just death in general, continued to haunt Shauna into her adult years.
Shauna and Jackie's complicated friendship has been one of the pillars of the series, but it could also be exciting to see the threads that eventually tied Shauna to Taissa and Natalie in their adult years. While it may be the shared bond of surviving the experience or something that bonded the three of them specifically out there, in season one, the ties that connected Shauna, Taissa, and Natalie as adults still appeared stronger than Misty's desire to be included, and Lottie and Van's later adult appearances in season two.
There is also the question of Coach Ben, who had emotionally dissociated himself from the girls and Travis in season two and seemed to choose to attempt to survive on his own rather than be a part of the cult that the girls and Travis have gotten themselves into in their strive to make it through the wilderness alive. However, it is only a matter of time before the girls and Travis catch up with Ben.
From the looks of the season three trailer, it appears that Yellowjackets is finally ready to reveal some of its biggest secrets, including what was so horrifying that they never wanted to discuss it with anyone outside of those who had survived the experience. It is only a matter of time before Yellowjackets reveals just how intense this season will get and what the conclusion will mean for all the characters in both timelines moving forward.
