PlayStation Plus Essential tier members can usually expect a solid January offering to start off the new year. We're going to go out on a limb here and say that January 2025... definitely leaves something to be desired.
Here are your free games for the month of January:
- Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
- Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered
- The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe
First up this month is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which feels like such a weird offering, as Rocksteady recently announced there will be no more updates to the game after this January, and it's been such a middling affair since its release. (Plus it was 95% off on Steam during November...)
Regardless, it's your first game this month. And if you're interested in it, it's free to play. You play as a member of the Suicide Squad (and each member has their own set of unique skills and weapons) as you take on an incoming alien invasion and hypnotized Justice League members who are now hellbent on destroying Metropolis. It's a good concept; the execution just leaves a lot to be desired.
Next up is Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, which is your standard racer we seem to get every other month. Despite it filling the slot for a racer, this is regarded as the best entry in this EA racing series. This is the remaster version that was released in 2020 and it can run in 4k at 60 FPS on the PS5.
You get your choice of playing as either a racer or a police officer in the fictional Seacrest County, and there are plenty of high-speed and higher-thrilling police chases throughout this game. We'd have to agree that this one is the best entry in the series, especially with the nice remaster.
Last up is our favorite offering this month, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. This game is... just weird. We don't want to say too much about it, because if you haven't played it, it's better not knowing what exactly it entails.
But to keep it simple, you play as Stanley, an office worker who finds the office completely deserted. You get a fun narrator who comments on the choices you make as Stanley and there are... plenty of different endings and ridiculous/bizarre moments throughout the game.
