So Help Me Todd: How Do Todd and Margaret Handle Harry's Return In The Season 2 Premiere?
When So Help Me Todd concluded its first season, it left a variety of cliffhangers and moments of closure, including Allison and Margaret's divorces and Todd's undecided question about whether he would fight for Susan before she could marry Peter. Of course, Margaret's divorce could not be so clean, as the final moments of season one found Margaret face to face with her ex-husband Harry.
When the comedy returned with "Iceland Was Horrible," it had been five days since Margaret walked in on Harry being in her home, and she had yet to confront him about it, seemingly hoping that their lack of interaction would have encouraged Harry to leave on his own. Seeing as that was not the case, Margaret eventually worries about what it could mean when Todd, Allison, and Lawrence stumble upon Harry.
The results are unsurprisingly not good, and in a rare moment, So Help Me Todd goes against a funny approach to give the family a sense of confusion before Todd's anger reaches a boiling point quickly after he realizes Harry is there. Todd's aggressive response is the result of a protective son watching out for his mother rather than making jokes out of the serious situation.
Otherwise, while So Help Me Todd may not have jumped right into its comical rhythm immediately, once Margaret and Todd reunite on-screen, the dynamic duo and all its comical glory returns right into place, solidifying Margaret and Todd's relationship as being the key to the heart of the show.
"Iceland Was Horrible" addresses all of the changes from the season finale, including what it now means that Todd has his license, Margaret's promotion as a partner, and Allison's search for self-discovery coming out of her divorce.
Of course, there would not be a show without a murder or mystery to solve, and Margaret and Todd are once again on the case, bantering with quick wit and schemes that help them uncover the truth about the episode's murder.
So Help Me Todd makes the choice to also address Todd's decision to go after Susan, which ultimately he was too late for. However, rather than show Todd as being bitter or pining, they have him accept and congratulate Susan on her marriage to Peter.
Allowing Todd and Susan's dynamic to step away from a will-they-won't-they relationship does at least two positive things for the show. For one, it steps away from a sense of repeitive actions while encouraging Todd's role as not being someone to try and break up a marriage. For another, it forces So Help Me Todd to grow Susan's role in other ways, including how "Iceland Was Horrible" appears to tease Susan's role in heading toward the partner track.
So Help Me Todd's season two premiere encourages that growth and change can be positive aspects to a show's development over time, even though the series also works to make sure that not enough changes too much to remove the elements that make the show work so well.
