Snoop Dogg's diplomatic take on the Kendrick Lamar & Lil Wayne Super Bowl controversy
Here is what Snoop Dogg had to say about the row over Kendrick Lamar's headlining the Super Bowl 59 Halftime Show over Lil Wayne in Nightcap with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson. Snoop, who shared the stage with Dr. Dre in the Super Bowl 56 Halftime Show in 2022, took some time to have the fans understand that hip-hop did not need the event but rather the event had embraced hip-hop. Looking back fifteen years, he asked, “How many hip hop artists were able to perform on that stage?” showing the development of the music category.
Yielding and keeping the political correctness in mind, Snoop did not state which side he takes more. Instead, he commended both Kendrick and Wayne which he was honored to perform through the opportunity offered by Dr. Dre. "Anytime anybody can get on that Super Bowl stage, remember this: It is a 12-13-minute show and you are not being paid for this” Snoop did point out but was quick to say that it was not about the money.
Snoop also vented out on his feelings toward Lil Wayne stating that he saw Wee rise to stardom while still with No Limit Records. “Lil Wayne is the current claim to the crown of being the best rapper to come out of New Orleans,” he said in the same breath and the manner in which Wayne outgrew even Snoop’s fame era. Wayne was too disappointed to come to New Orleans as he was not selected to sing in front of a live audience but Snoop said he would come and watch the show like a regular fan.
Wayne had displayed an outpour of frustration over the NFL decision saying he felt ‘broken’, and there were rumors that Jay-Z made the final call. Snoop, however, looked at the bigger picture which was hip-hop music being featured in the Super Bowl plus the illustrious careers that both Wayne and Lamar have had thus his response was decent and he kept it civil.
