Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has those days. Keeping the immoral words of Hannah Montana in mind, Not Bad For a Girl by Anastasia Ryan does just that.

You might recognize Anastasia Ryan from her debut novel: You Should Smile More. The story follows a girl with RBF who gets fired and has to deal with the consequences of that while getting revenge. If you didn’t pick it up in 2023, you need to know.

Moving onto her current release, Not Bad For a Girl shares a similar idea but does something completely different. Honestly, if you enjoy contemporaries with a dash of romance and some hijinks for a fun heroine, then these books are right up your alley.

I’d like to thank Sourcebooks Casablanca for sending me an ARC as I ended up devouring it in one sitting!

Not Bad For a Girl is a fun and zany rom-com from Anastasia Ryan

If you’ve picked up You Should Smile More by this author, then you know how well Anastasia Ryan writes her characters. This time, we’re following Indiana Aaron who after getting passed up for a promotion, speaks her mind during a meeting. Due to that, she ends up getting “promoted” to the remote team so she’s able to work from home.

Things are going alright for her but things take a zany turn when she corrects her boss and Melvin Hammer incorrectly assumes she’s a man. From there, the legend of Indiana Aaron is born as the ultimate “guy’s guy” and manly man who does everything including being a backup goalie for a professional NHL team.

While it seems like a great idea at first, things start to snowball for Indiana who can’t seem to come clean about her identity. In addition, she’s also juggling a big project, a relationship with a cute coworker, and eventually, ends up adopting a fish who started its own family. It’s truly a wild ride from start to finish for Indiana.

What made me love this book most was just how absurd and ridiculous things got. I mean Indiana Aaron truly became an icon in his own right. It was just hilarious to see what everyone was willing to believe and see how everyone’s biases played into the story. In a way, Not Bad For a Girl felt like the ultimate companion piece to 2023’s Barbie as it touched on similar themes.

As with most contemporary stories, Indiana did end up getting her happily ever after and was even able to one-up her boss. I absolutely loved the “twist” the author included when it came to the deal. I think that was ingenious and it honestly made me love this book all the more. If you’re looking for a zany contemporary with an adorable romance, then you need to grab a copy of Not Bad For a Girl by Anastasia Ryan ASAP.
