"Fire Storm" takes things a step further for Scott, as La Brea finally begins to directly address Scott's connection that would have led him to have a meeting with Maya before falling into the sinkhole.

From the moment La Brea revealed that the young child, Isaiah, grew up to become Gavin, the series spent a lot of time discovering all the ways Gavin was connected to the workings of the sinkhole, including how his family existed in the future and that his parents were both directly involved with the time travel project. But "Fire Storm" is also getting into how Gavin, as an adult, ended up in similar circumstances.

Gavin had been missing memories of a year of his life, and La Brea has finally begun unraveling the truth of what he was really doing at that point in time. Gavin had been working with Maya on a government scheme to transform planes into time machines so that they could alter war events if the time ever occurred where such a situation needed to take place. But, what did any of this have to do with Scott, who had a meeting with Maya?

Unfortunately, La Brea does not go into all the details of that quite yet, only teasing that Gavin's missing memories had him be aware of Scott's research paper which was likely the cause of Scott being requested for a meeting.

Scott describes that what he had written had nothing to do with time travel, which brings up questions about what was really written, and how it could have caught Maya's eye, especially as Scott seems confused as to how his writing could have been relevant in the first place.

This time, however, the 10,000 B.C. plot line perfectly lines up with the events occurring in 2021 as it undergoes a plan to reach Scott in the future to help the group get a much-needed microchip in the past.

Meeting Scott in the past shows another side of the character, someone still facing the grief of losing his older brother, but could not help but be fascinated by the note that was somehow left for him.

"Fire Storm" finally introduces Gavin's sister, Helena, who had only been teased briefly previously before. The family reunion is more confusing for Gavin, as the entire time he had spent with Helena previously he is unable to remember. As he finds out, they had been working together to try and destroy the time travel project.

The two storylines coincide well together as they not only give Ty a way to return to 10,000 B.C., but it also allows audiences a better glimpse into Scott's background just before falling into the sinkhole and the suggestion that there is more danger to come from Helena and Maya.

The reveal that Maya may have far darker intentions allows La Brea to increase the stakes as it heads into its final two episodes. Of course, once Scott recognizes that Maya may be more dangerous than she seems, it means that Maya fakes a reason for returning to Gavin and Izzy without him.

Unfortunately, Scott was not able to make his suspicions known to Gavin and Izzy before confronting Maya. While Scott reacts on instinct at seeing Maya's scars as he connects the dots in his head at the realization that Maya's role is bigger than he initially believed, Scott may have been able to be more productive with Gavin and Izzy toward Maya's secrets had he stayed silent.

Lucas, Sam, and Veronica's storyline, however, does not do as much to push the plot forward. While it does do the work to secure Veronica's place as a growing leader in their strive to put out the fire, and gives a bit more background to Sam and Riley's history, the story in general tends to fall flat against the bigger stakes occurring with the other characters.

Although Veronica and Lucas seem more interested in remaining in 10,000 B.C., it is uncertain if they will be able to. The same goes for Ty, who had found love there.

La Brea did give answers to Gavin and Sam, however, by allowing Ty to inform them that Josh and Riley had likely landed, and potentially remain, in 1965 following their rush out of 10,000 B.C.

While the stakes are rising as La Brea heads into its final two episodes, questions remain about when and how Eve, Josh, and Riley will re-enter the storyline and how the show will ultimately wrap up its plot.
