Eddie Vedder performs touching mash-up with daughter Harper at Ohana Fest
Pearl Jam's lead vocalist shocked hundreds of music lovers with a surprise performance by his sixteen year daughter, Harper Vedder during the Ohana Festival in Dana Point in California on Sunday night. Vedder’s band was the main act for the festival which had Devo, Sting, Maren Morris, Alanis Morissette, among other artists.
Speaking out loud with his audience during their performance, Vedder looked at the crowd’s diversity throughout the festival, which took three days, and said it was time for a "powerful young woman" to join the band. With a broad grin, he presented Hayes, who was standing beside her father, all nervous but eager at the same time.
The two started with an excellent blend of two songs; Wayne Cochran’s "Last Kiss,” famously covered by Pearl Jam then followed it with a great ballad by Taylor Swift, “The Best Day,” from her Fearless album. While Vedder sang the sentimental lyrics by playing his acoustic guitar on “Last Kiss”, Harper was given time to sing Swift’s lyrics; “I’m five years old, it’s getting cold I got my big coat…” She began softly but grew bolder and the audience was entirely on her side.
Pappy Vedder and his daughter switched singing all through the performance and the passion dancing on their faces could not be missed. A sensitive line was “I have a wonderful dad, his strength is empowering me” and Harper memorized it so well. Looking at her dad and singing ‘I had the best days with you’ the love and pride that the two of them have for each other was evident and to make it even more special for not only the Vedder family but for all of us watching.
At the end of the song, Harper kissed her dad’s head before she left the stage which was great to stamp the good memory of the duet. For Vedder, this was an opportunity to bow to Taylor Swift again, an artist he has previously paid homage to. It was in May when he said that he is a big fan of Swift, celebrating the concert with his wife and two daughters, watching her Eras Tour. He appreciated her for not only writing countless songs but also being empathetic engaging with her fans and hiding little goodies in her songs for the fans to find.
At number one, Pearl Jam’s “Last Kiss,” originally released in Pearl Jam’s cover of “Last Kiss” which was out as a Christmas fan club single in 1998 has remained one of the band’s signature tracks – Sunday proved that it can have added connotation when performed with Vedder’s daughter.
