Donald Glover is 21 Savage in new trailer about the rapper's life
21 Savage recruited Donald Glover to help bring the story of his incarceration by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the big screen. Glover portrays Savage in a movie trailer for The American Dream: The 21 Savage Story. Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin plays the younger version of the rapper in what seems to be a star-studded cast detailing a "personal crisis" Savage went through.
Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover, Jamal Olori, and Fam Udeorji directed the trailer. On Sunday, 21 Savage teased a cover of him, Glover, and Laughlin sporting Savage's signature look. What seems to be new music from the rapper can be heard in the teaser trailer.
The American Dream: The 21 Savage Story, based on the trailer, says it'll be released in theaters on Independence Day, but in an exclusive from Variety, it's unclear if a feature film actually exists.
According to Variety, 21 Savage was arrested by ICE in 2019 as part of former President Donald Trump's mission to fix immigration issues in the United States, starting with rounding up undocumented citizens.
The hip-hop artist, raised in Atlanta although born in the United Kingdom, was threatened with deportation after being held for several weeks. This resulted in "Free 21 Savage," a campaign involving support from fans, family members, and high-profile celebrities. He was eventually released and has been vocal about his experience.
Since then, 21 Savage has released two joint projects, one with Metro Boomin called Savage Mode II and another with Drake titled Her Loss. He's also been touring the country with Drake on their "It's All a Blur" tour. Savage has snagged multiple awards for his music in the past, including a Grammy, and he also has a few nominations at the prestigious award show this year.
