After an almost five-year hiatus, Ethan Hunt is back. The highly anticipated seventh entry in the spy series Mission: Impossible released a new trailer today, packed full of all the stunts and emotions we’ve come to know and love from the franchise.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is set to release on July 12th and follows Tom Cruise’s Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt as he fights to save both his team — and the world. Check out the trailer below:

The Mission: Impossible franchise has never shied away from showing the emotional tolls that spying can take, and this trailer shows Ethan at his most desperate when his friends are being threatened. Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh entry in the Mission: Impossible series, seems like it will continue its predecessor‘s focus on the complexity of choices while adding the thematic battle between fate and free will.

This film marks the return of fan-favorite characters Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg). Also returning is Kittredge (Henry Czerny), a character we haven’t seen since his turn as the head of the IMF in the first Mission: Impossible movie released in 1996.

New additions to the cast include Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Esai Morales as the mysterious new villain. The recent Mission: Impossible movies have made great use of their female characters, so I’m excited to see Atwell and Klementieff join the franchise, and from what little we see of him in the trailer, Morales is shaping up to be a formidable opponent for Ethan Hunt.

Along with the thrilling new clips we get in this trailer, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One‘s poster design also highlights the film’s spectacular stuntwork. Last December, we got a close look at Cruise riding a motorcycle off of a cliff, and the trailer and poster reference a fight scene happening on a moving train.

But more than just being a vehicle for audiences to watch Tom Cruise taunt physics, Dead Reckoning Part One is lining up to be an emotional character-driven installment. Ethan’s most defining character trait is that he values his friends’ lives above all, even saying as much in this trailer, and this trailer’s tone is fully based around the idea of self-sacrifice.
