All American: Is Spencer And Olivia’s Relationship Worth Fighting For?
The relationship between Spencer and Olivia has always played a role in the heart of All American. They started as friends, but even then, the growing hint of something more rested between them, and their connection only grew over time. So it seemed like an inevitable development when Olivia and Spencer finally got together.
But, their happiness as a couple only lasted so long. Although different schedules could not keep them apart, aspirations for the future became a critical factor in their season five breakup, when Olivia’s story had her on the verge of exploding Spencer’s football team.
They could not easily maneuver around the massive roadblock, and Spencer decided that they would be better off breaking up at a point when they could still salvage their relationship and friendship rather than risk things worsening.
But, since their breakup, Spencer and Olivia have existed in limbo, and “Feel It in the Air” continues to address the elephant in the room. Olivia and Spencer did not break up because they fell out of love, a concept they keep being reminded of.
However, neither has been able to move forward fully, and they have also not gotten back together. It was becoming a paradox, watching Spencer and Olivia grieve their relationship, wanting it back, and wondering how or who could help them move forward.
But is it time for Olivia to take a chance at getting back together with Spencer after he has decided to move forward with Alicia?
Olivia spends “Feel It in the Air” on a date with Noah, trying to see if their chemistry was a fluke or if there is the potential between them to be more. Although Olivia may have had a pleasant time with Noah, he is not Spencer. When Olivia confides in her mother over her remaining feelings for Spencer, Laura encourages Olivia to fight for Spencer. But is it too late?
Spencer had just spent the episode bonding with Alicia and hearing her story of worrying about being the other woman in a relationship and wishing to avoid that again. Spencer assures Alicia that she is not the other woman and wants to move forward with her, even if he is not precisely where she is yet.
Spencer has admitted to not being over Olivia yet, so if Olivia is willing to try and get back together with Spencer, does that spell trouble and hurt feelings for everyone?
But, while Olivia’s remaining feelings for Spencer may be kept from him, he does learn two other massive secrets.
Once again, Layla and Jordan’s relationship has been revealed due to some quick comments and lousy lying. Spencer is suspicious of Jordan’s decision to stay at GAU, even if Spencer is thrilled. But why would Jordan stick around if he had been so willing to leave before?
Spencer does not spend too much time debating it until he overhears Jordan discussing the transfer portal on the phone. Spencer is surprised to hear that Jordan would be discussing that with Layla, and Jordan’s quick cover that Layla would have thoughts on the subject, along with Jordan’s previous jumpy attitude, are enough to send Spencer out investigating.
As it turns out, Spencer does not have to do much detective work as Layla is just as lousy at covering her relationship with Jordan as he is. All Spencer has to do is ask a few innocent questions and make a few comments for Layla to act just as jumpy.
Spencer can not keep his grin to himself the entire time, seemingly amused by Layla’s attempts to back out of the subject. But, before Spencer can ask her directly, an awkward confrontation with Olivia and Noah allows Layla an escape route.
Still, Spencer does not let the subject go so quickly and asks Jordan directly. Although Jordan and Layla had discussed telling their friends as a team about their relationship, Jordan does not have much room to dismiss the subject or lie again, as Jordan’s jumpy attitude also has to do with him hiding the truth about Billy being the new GAU head football coach.
Telling the truth allows Jordan to be honest about his relationship with Layla and grants Spencer and Jordan a nice bonding moment as Spencer promises to keep it quiet but says he is happy for them.
However, “Feel It in the Air” does not stop there. There is still one more big secret for Spencer to learn, and he does in the episode’s final moments. Discovering that Billy will be the new head coach instead of Coach Kenny is a shock to Spencer, who thought Kenny would be promoted.
So, how will Spencer deal with the reveals? Although Jordan knew the truth, it was Billy’s responsibility to tell Spencer the truth. Jordan had even told Billy that he was tired of keeping the secret and gave Billy one more chance to tell Spencer the truth, or he would.
Spencer and Billy’s relationship may be challenged as Spencer tries to navigate the potential betrayal he may feel at knowing how the coaching staff is changing and that he was not told sooner.
“Feel It in the Air” is an episode that signals some significant changes in relationships, whether romantic, platonic, or familial. But how hard will everyone fight to save the challenged relationships from falling apart?
