For Halloween, everyone is entitled to a good scare and Summerside Lake Massacre takes that phrase to the extreme.

Since Halloween is upon us, it would only be right to feature at least one horror book in October and this one is a recent read of mine. As I’m obviously more of a romance reader, it’s clear horror books are a bit out of my comfort zone.

Regardless, the Golden Girls readathon helped me to broaden my horizons. While I don’t read horror books, I do love horror movies, and books that give a similar vibe are exactly what I’m looking for.

That’s where Summerside Lake Massacre by L.R.J. Allen comes in as it’s a great starting point if you’re a fan of slasher movies but are craving it in a book format.

This week’s #TBRTrending goes to Summerside Lake Massacre by L.R.J. Allen.

Let me start this off by saying that if you’re not a fan of horror and can’t handle reading about gore, then be sure to skip this one. However, if you are and love slasher movies, then you need to bump this one up on your TBR.

This book deals with a classic storyline as it follows a group of counselors at a summer camp that had an unfortunate incident happen decades ago. Then we also follow another storyline in which a well-known criminal is being transported to another facility. As you might imagine, killings start happening at the camp and we’re trying to figure out who the culprit is.

While I won’t give away much more about the plot, I will say that I adored Summerside Lake Masscarre because it managed to emulate popular horror movies and tropes but didn’t feel like a carbon copy of any of them. The story still felt fresh but it was clear the author is a fan of 80s and 90s horror movies.

This book is also incredibly fast-paced and if you had the time, you’d be able to read it in one sitting as I read over half of it in one sitting. Summerside Lake Massacre is frankly a bloody good time (get it?) and has the ideal atmosphere if you’re craving something spooky and Gorey for your upcoming Halloween festivities.

The only crime worth mentioning though is that this book has less than 20 ratings on Goodreads which is just upsetting. If you have any interest in this book, then it’s worth picking up, especially if you’re subscribed to Kindle Unlimited as it’s available there. If you don’t, it’s still only $2.99 on Amazon Kindle. No matter how you decide to consume this story, it’s worth checking out for Halloween 2022.
