Witchy romance books have become a huge part of the romance landscape. In particular, one very popular one is Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper.

While the series began with Payback’s a Witch, it now includes at least 2 more books and even more excitingly, the first book is being adapted. As reported by Variety, Village Roadshow TV is going to be adapting Payback’s a Witch into a TV series.

Payback’s a Witch was originally published in 2021 and has garnered over 16,000 ratings on Goodreads. The first book follows Emmy, a witch returning to her hometown, the challenges that come with that, and the romance she has with Talia, another witch in town. All in all, the first book is a lot of fun and perfect for Halloween reading.

With Payback’s a Witch being adapted, could we see other witchy romance books following the same route?

Could Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper begin a page-to-screen trend?

There is no denying Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper is a lot of fun. We at Culturess have written about it a handful of times. Of all the books we’ve covered though, it didn’t seem like that series would be adapted. First and foremost was because it’s sapphic but thankfully, the adaptations gods were on our side.

The reason why it’s such a fun choice for an adaptation is the atmosphere of the entire series. It’s set in a small town with some witchy autumnal vibes and it’s just the perfect book to read in October during the Halloween season. Plus it’ll be so cool to see how they decide to adapt it into a TV series especially given some of the more risque scenes between Emmy and Talia.

Regardless of how the company decides to tackle things, hopefully, we’ll see a new trend emerge with the adaptation of Payback’s a Witch. In particular, I’d like to see other witchy romance books picked up as there are SO many and so many ideas we need to see. Some other books could include the Fix-It Witches series by Ann Aguirre, the Stay a Spell series by Juliette Cross, and the Ex Hex series by Erin Sterling.

As far as witchy romance books go, there are plenty to choose from as each tells a unique story and each gives those cozy Halloween vibes. While those mentioned above are just examples, the stories are too good not to add to your TBR. However, my fingers are crossed that at least one of them also ends up being adapted.

While there are plenty of witchy TV shows, it’s rare that we see a TV series focused on a witchy romance. Considering how popular book-to-screen adaptations of romance books have become, it’s surprising how long this has taken. Even so, it’s exciting to see romance books finally getting their due.

Considering how popular fall has come and the fact that most of us love cozy vibes, Payback’s a Witch should usher in a new era of page-to-screen shows and movies. All of that won’t be possible though if my fellow romance readers and romance lovers don’t show up so let’s make sure we support by both reading the book, reviewing it, and eventually, watching the show.
