Everything to know about Freeze Dried Skittles and other things I ate at the Oklahoma State Fair
By Alex Mcewen
Across the United States, specifically the midwest, the annual State Fair is a very big deal. Oklahoma is no different! In fact, in the Sooner State, the Oklahoma State Fair is one of the state’s largest annual gatherings. According to a recent report, it is also one of the best and largest state fairs in the country, drawing about one-million visitors each September. At any fair sights, sounds, and the thrill of carnival rides across the midway are all great, but the food is what steals the show. Here are a few of my favorite foods I ate at the 2022 Oklahoma State Fair and where you can get the same treats or something similar.
The best food at the 2022 Oklahoma State Fair
5: Philly Cheesesteak Fries: Project Krave
These are exactly what they sound like – french fries topped with Philly Cheesesteak meat, queso, grilled peppers & onions, and BBQ sauce. If you are feeling adventurous and like to walk on the spicy side, try them with jalapenos and ghost pepper cheese. They are served at a food truck called Project Krave, which has been featured on The Cooking Channel.
4: Flavor Burst Ice Cream: Sundae Factory
If you like soft-serve ice cream, please make it a point to try flavor burst ice cream at least once. Once you’ve tried it, it’s hard to eat regular soft serve again. Unlike traditional soft serve that comes in the flavors of chocolate, vanilla, or twist, flavor burst is available in many different flavors. It is a vanilla base soft serve with flavored syrup infused into it. Strawberry is delicious and also comes in Banana, Green Apple, Orange, and many more. Search “flavor burst near me” to find the treat.
3: Chocolate Suicide Sundae: Guiltless Concessions
This concoction is served at another Oklahoma-based food truck called Guiltless Concessions and is calling for all chocolate lovers! The chocolate suicide starts with a large brownie at the base. Then it is loaded with vanilla soft serve, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, chopped peanuts, and a cherry on top. If you are in the area, check out the truck on Instagram, they could be at an event serving up their sweet sundaes.
2: Freeze Dried Skittles: Gram’s Sweet Treats
If you have never heard of freeze-dried candy, search it on TikTok or Instagram. The videos are as addicting as the treats. Gram’s Sweet Treats offers a variety of different freeze-dried candies and snacks. The freeze-dried Skittles was the treat I sampled and ultimately purchased. The best way to describe the Skittles is a consistency similar to a Cheeto Puff or a Funyun but with a colorful crunchy shell. Then the flavor is like traditional Skittles on steroids. Gram’s has a brick-and-mortar store in Edmond, Oklahoma. If you are not in OKC, freeze-dried Skittles can be purchased on Amazon.
1: Honey Pepper Bacon Dog: The Urb Express
When most people think of a hot dog, they probably picture a basic dog with ketchup, mustard, or both condiments. However, the Honey Pepper Bacon Dog from The Urb Express is anything but basic. The dog is served with honey pepper bacon bits, jack cheese, and a sweet and perfectly tangy honey mustard sauce. I could eat this again and again. When the truck is nearby again, I will pick one or maybe two of these dogs up. As a bonus, the truck is veteran owned and operated.
It was hard to narrow this list down to five. It could have easily been ten or more because the Oklahoma State Fair offers many tasty treats. It’s all over now, until next September when the event returns for 11 more days of fun. If a fair comes to a town near you, spend the day there, make some memories, and eat your heart out.
