Spotify launches new feature for audiobooks
Music, podcasts, and now audiobooks? One of the world’s biggest music platforms is launching an audiobook feature. Spotify has launched Spotify Audiobooks for all U.S. users. As of today, Spotify users will be able to listen to audiobooks whether or not they pay for a Spotify Premium subscription. But, being that it is early in the process, there will be a few limited features.
What is Spotify Audiobooks?
Spotify Audiobooks aren’t free. While the new addition to the platform is free, each audiobook is individually priced. There is also no discount for Spotify Premium users. According to Mashable, “to purchase an audiobook through Spotify, you will be taken to the web from the app to complete your purchase — like how you pay for Spotify Premium — and then brought back to the app.”
Unlike the traditional Spotify platform, recommendations will be curated by the company. However, Spotify is working on adding algorithmic recommendations soon to make the experience more user-specific. Users will also not be able to see what books friends have purchased and are listening to (current users can see what friends are streaming through its desktop app).
To purchase an audiobook, you will first click on a lock icon that will appear over the play option The link will then take you to an online browser to complete the transaction. Afterward, you will automatically be taken back to Spotify to start listening. The audiobook will automatically appear in your Spotify library and allow access to offline listening and speed controls.
The platform currently contains over 300,000 titles for users with new additions also expected to come in the future.
