Stargirl kicked off its third season on The CW with plenty of drama, frenemies everywhere, and the unexpected murder of a former enemy. Basically, it was everything we could have hoped for in a superhero season premiere.

There is something about Stargirl that we love. Not only does the cast work so well together, but that small-town vibe gives us an exciting approach to a superhero story. It’s not so much that this is an origin story, as it is the idea that villains and heroes can be found anywhere.

And in a lot of ways, that is exactly what this premiere reminded us of. But at the same time, there were a few things that just didn’t hit the mark.

Stargirl’s third season premieres with a murder and a town of frenemies

First, can we talk about Joel McHale’s Starman? Is he a frenemy? Is he an enemy? Or is he truly still the hero he once was? We don’t have a clue and this premiere left us wondering if he is going to be someone we have to watch out for.

Then we have Cindy. We know she is a frenemy, but it will be interesting to see how long she lasts trying to be a member of the Justice Society of America (JSA). She can clearly barely stand being a good person, even if she is trying her hardest. Of course, with her holding the smoking gun in her hands at the end of the episode (the weapon that clearly killed the Gambler), people thinking she is a killer could push her back into her villainous old ways.

And yes, we have to talk about the Gambler too. He was a villain trying to make amends because of a daughter he knew nothing about (and can’t find). With him writing a letter to his daughter before his sudden murder, we can’t help but wonder if he knew someone was gunning for him (literally). Our big question is, who and where is his daughter? And of course, there is also the question of who killed him (and maybe why).

In a season about frenemies, we can’t wait to figure out who the real bad guys are and who will end up being heroes by the end of this chapter in the Stargirl story.

But what did you think of this episode? And what do you think is up with Starman and his return? Which frenemies are you watching out for this season?
