Good news for Stargirl fans! Not only is the series’ highly anticipated second season just a few short months away, but The CW has also already decided to bring the superhero drama back for a third.

The news of the show’s season 3 renewal comes just a few short months before its season 2 premiere on August 10.

The first teen-focused superhero series in the DC TV universe, Stargirl started out as a  collaboration between The CW and DC’s now-defunct premium streaming service, DC Universe. (New episodes would stream online and then air on The CW the next day.)

The show officially moved entirely to The CW at the conclusion of its first season, where it will now air alongside the rest of the Arrowvese. (Though Stargirl, technically, exists on a different Earth from the one Supergirl and The Flash inhabit.)

The story follows Courtney Whitmore, a teen whose family moves to Blue Valley, Nebraska, where she discovers a mysterious, semi-sentient staff in the possessions of her new stepfather, Pat. Pat, you see, used to be a member of the Justice Society of America, and that staff belonged to his best friend, Starman.

But when the staff comes alive again for Courtney, she’ll have to learn how to be a hero on her own terms. (And maybe reconstitute the JSA along the way.)

Stargirl’s season 3 renewal was announced alongside a season 2 pickup for the new CW drama Kung Fu.

“We are beyond proud to continue to share the stories of Nicky Shen and Courtney Whitmore, two strong, powerful young women at the center of this new generation of hit shows for The CW in Kung Fu and DC’s Stargirl, ” Mark Pedowitz, chairman and CEO of The CW Network, said in a statement.

“While each boasts remarkable talent on both sides of the camera, Kung Fu and DC’s Stargirl have not only treated fans to some visually stunning action and high-flying heroics, but they also both strike very powerful emotional chords as they delve into the family dynamics and personal relationships at their core, and we are so excited to see what happens next.”

Since we’re still a ways away from Stargirl’s season 2 premiere, there’s little to no information available about what its third might look like. But it’s always nice to see smart shows that are willing to take risks succeed – here’s to watching Courtney’s adventures for seasons to come.
