After The CW decided they were going to channel Game of Thrones and the Red Wedding, cancelling almost their entire lineup of shows, we knew that Roswell New Mexico might end with some of us being heartbroken. For almost the entire fourth season, we really thought the sadness was going to revolve around Michael and Alex. But in the end, they got their happy ending (even if we want more for them too).

You know which couple did not get the happy ending we may have wanted? That would be Max and Liz. The couple that has been on so many of the posters since the very beginning, and their ending is perhaps one of the saddest.

While every other character gets some sort of happy ending, we don’t truly get that for Max and Liz. Sure, Max tells Liz that he will come back for her and they will get married. And yes, he absolutely does slide that ring on her finger and give her the most beautiful goodbye kiss. But that’s just it – this is a goodbye.

In the final moments of the final episode of Roswell New Mexico, Dallas and Max walk through a portal to their original planet, Oasis. And that’s the end. We don’t get to see what comes next or get to see the duo, affectionately known as #Echo over on Twitter, get their happy ending together.

Roswell New Mexico ends with so many beautiful moments, but not one for Liz and Max

On the one hand, “How’s It Going To Be?” is a stunning finale for this series. It gave us a wedding, a new romance, and even the satisfaction of knowing that Kyle and Isobel are officially a couple after a long road to happiness (for both of them). But then we have Liz and Max.

I don’t know how the writers could have done anything differently in terms of giving us an ending without forgetting what makes this show so amazing. This show is all about relationships and love, but it is also about what it means to be human (and alien) and that means that things aren’t always perfect. Things can be messy and sad.

And while we may have wanted more for Max and Liz (my recap makes it clear that I was devastated by this ending), I can’t help but think this was also a beautiful ending even for them.

Do I wish we were getting a fifth season? Absolutely! (I am ready to petition for more or even a spin-off) There is so much more to the story of Roswell New Mexico, Liz Ortecho, and Max Evans. We would have loved to get to see Max’s growth from being the “savior” of Oasis. But at this point, we are not getting that.

And yet, we do have the hope that maybe in the future Max and Liz will get their happy ending. Will we get to see it happen? Probably not. But we can dream.

What did you think of Max and Liz’s ending? Are you as sad to see their story end this way as we are? How do you wish their story had ended?
