Is MTV bringing back music? Here’s your VMAs recap!
Back in the day, MTV stood for Music Television and if the 2022 Video Music Awards could be summarized one day it might be in that way. Is music coming back to MTV?
While its demo ratings only ticked up from 1%, there was a new breath in the air during the entire telecast. Like usual, the 3-hour show aired across 13 Viacom networks that included MTV, VH1, the CW, Comedy Central, Nick At Night, Pop, TV Land, MTV2, Logo, Paramount Network, BET, BET Her, and CMT. But the show was focused more on its performances rather than the spectacle of it all. It felt like it was about the music. And isn’t that what it is supposed to be about?
Nicki Minaj took home the MTV Video Vanguard Award and performed hits such as “Moment For Life” and ‘Superbass”. Taylor Swift gave us the meme-worthy clips of her dancing from the crowd, took home a VMA for Best Long Form Video, and even announced a new album – that is notably coming out on Kim Kardashian’s birthday. And let’s not mention the dress that screams “Look What You Make Me Do” music video!
One of the stranger moments of the night was when Johnny Depp came back with an appearance – multiple asking MTV to bring back music. Sure, it is how we feel, but it felt severely out of place as he was dressed as the MTV moon person and was unannounced and uncalled for.
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers performed generations of classics as they took home the Global Icon Award and won the Best Rock Video. While their acceptance award speeches were greatly censored, their excitement, along with that of Bad Bunny’s for his win live from Yankee Stadium for Artist of the Year was greatly felt.
