San Diego Comic-Con is underway and with it comes plenty of sneak peeks, trailers, and news of what’s to come. And that means we have a Black Adam teaser.

If you are a fan of DC comics, then you might be familiar with the character of Black Adam. This is a character who actually represents the opposite of Shazam (or at the very least, a darker version of the superhero).

The two characters are in many ways different sides of the same coin. But when we head into the DCEU things change and instead of a Black Adam/Shazam mash-up, we are getting a story dedicated to this particular hero or in some cases antihero. Just like Shazam got his own story, Black Adam is getting a chance to shine on his own as well.

SDCC gives us a first look at the tortured hero that is Black Adam

And what better way is there to shine a spotlight on this character, than by giving him an origin story that is truly tortured. In fact, the teaser that was dropped at SDCC outright states that his powers are not a gift but rather a curse. And considering we see him scream out as someone is killed (likely), we can’t help but realize that there was a lot of pain that went into his past and the making of this man.

Will he be saving the world in this movie? We don’t really know. But, it is clear that he has two choices to make: he can either be the destroyer or he can be a savior. What will he choose? Luckily, this teaser makes us think that there really is a hero deep inside of Black Adam and it is one who knows how to fight and use the powers he has been granted.

He may not think he is worthy, but obviously, someone does. And the fact that his powers came from vengeance, does not mean that he can’t make the decision to be a savior. He may not have been able to save someone close to him, but that doesn’t mean he can’t save others.

His powers are very similar to those we see from Shazam, and that gives us hope that the future of this character could lead to a Shazam team-up. Will that happen? We don’t know. But we can’t wait to see how all of this plays out, just so we can get what the comics have promised in the past.

But first, we have to get to the actual movie. In the meantime check out the teaser for Black Adam from SDCC:
