Tom Swift feels like it has found its footing now that we are four episodes in
We are officially four episodes into the first season of Tom Swift on The CW and while it felt like the show got off to a rocky start, it quickly seemed to hit its stride. Perhaps the biggest issue was that Tom was written in a way that was leaving him less than likable. And yet, we can absolutely understand his anger.
But after the latest episode, “…And the Chocolate Cowboys,” it feels like Tom Swift has found the right blend of genius tech billionaire playboy and son wanting to save his father. While he is still prone to not listening to the people around him and his anger is definitely something that he needs to work on, there is something about Tom that really does leave us wanting more.
At one point in the fourth episode, his adopted brother (who is actually his cousin) called him out for treating him the same way that Tom’s father treated him. It was a full-circle type of moment for Tom because it felt like that was a direct hit. He has been ignoring the people in his life until it comes back to bite him and it has definitely left him fighting on more fronts than he would need to if he would just stop and listen.
But, even with Tom’s penchant for being bullheaded, it is clear that he does want to be a better man. He was willing to listen to his brother, even if it did take anger on both of their parts to get to that moment.
Tom Swift is giving us a fascinating storyline, even as their titular character is showing the kind of character growth he needs
While we may be tuning into Tom Swift for the mix of high-tech science and drama with detective work, we are also showing up because of the characters and cast. There is something to be said for having a black, gay leading man showing up and showing out. And of course, we have our strong ladies representing too.
Tom Swift is finally giving us a reason to tune in because we want to see what happens next and we actually care about our characters. Even with Tom’s anger, we are rooting for him and his mission to save his father. We understand his anger and pain and we also get why he is hiding things from people he cares about.
But we want to know what you think. Are you enjoying the series? Do you feel like the series has already begun to find its footing with the characters and the storyline? Tell us what you think!
