Booksmart (2019)

Undoubtedly, Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut is one of the most authentic Gen-Z films made so far. It’s funny, heartfelt, and perfectly captures the high school experience of teens today through the lens of a coming-of-age comedy.

Booksmart follows Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) as they realize that they have spent their entire high school career avoiding parties to get into good colleges, only to discover their party-animal classmates got into the same good schools. They decide to try to make up an entire high school career’s worth of partying in a single night, leading to hilarious shenanigans and heartfelt revelations.

The film’s representation comes in the form of Amy, an out-and-proud lesbian in theory but not yet in practice. The casual acceptance of her sexuality makes it feel wholly Gen-Z, and the inclusion of her almost-romance with a classmate makes this film a perfect watch during Pride Month.
