The Half of It (2020)

Alice Wu’s Netflix original movie felt like it flew under the radar when it first dropped in March of 2020. The whole world was trying to navigate this brave new world while this film was quietly released on Netflix. It follows Ellie (Leah Lewis) as she helps her new friend Paul (Daniel Diemer) write letters to a girl he has a crush on. Though, as Ellie helps Paul romance Aster (Alexxis Lemire), she starts to fall for her too.

In a wonderful story about friendship and self, The Half of It shines as a coming-of-age film that explores the awkwardness of high school while still allowing for profound moments of self-discovery for all its characters. Known for her previous classic lesbian film Saving Face, Alice Wu uses The Half of It to tell a wholly authentic story about her time spent as a young, queer Asian woman and offer up another instant classic for the queer movie genre.
