It’s been a while since Xbox’s Games with Gold has had a stellar lineup of games in a month. Thankfully, May looks to be a great time to be a subscriber!

Here are your offerings for May and the dates they’re available to download:

  • Yoku’s Island Express, May 1 to 31
  • The Inner World – The Last Wind Monk, May 16 to June 15
  • Hydro Thunder Hurricane, May 1 to 15
  • Viva Piñata: Party Animals, May 16 to 31

May highlights for Xbox Games with Gold members

Yoku’s Island Express is a MetroidVania-pinball game, which means it fuses MetroidVania gameplay with pinball mechanics. It doesn’t sound like it would work very well, but it does, and the game is colorful, lighthearted, and oddly addicting. You play as Yoku, a tiny beetle, and push around a ball while making deliveries on an open-world island. Between the main story, side quests, and collectibles, there’s no shortage of things to do and discover.

The Inner World – The Last Wind Monk retains the charming art style of the series and keeps up stellar voice acting.  You’ll find yourself attached to the main playable characters after only a few puzzles. And the puzzles are aplenty in this adventure game.

Hydro Thunder Hurricane is your throwback game of the month, taking you back to the Xbox360 days when boat racing was… I guess a thing? You have your choice of eight different courses and different boats to race with a handful of different kinds of races and challenges. If you want to play a dated arcade racer, this is your game for the month.

Last up in your four offerings is Viva Piñata: Party Animals, your off-brand Mario Party for the month. The visuals are colorful and wild and if you’ve played any of the other Viva Piñata games, you’ll feel right at home in this one. The mini-games are enjoyable and not too difficult and the racing sections are still pretty fun.

As a fun bonus, subscribers get an additional three free games this month, which are Braid, Cloning Clyde, and Joe Danger 2: The Movie. If you want to check any of these out, I’d suggest Braid, which has won multiple awards and is sometimes toted as one of the best indie games ever.
