If you miss Olympic figure skating, you can catch US champions live in a city near you
If you’re like me and you go into a post-Olympics figure skating funk after the Games, there’s something to get excited about: you can see several of your favorites live! Many of the U.S. medalists are participating in Stars on Ice, which has returned after two years since the pandemic hit. You can view the full list of cities and performance dates here. Tickets are also much more affordable than say a Broadway show, with prices starting at $30, which is great for family budgets.
Headlining the performances is Olympic gold medalist Nathan Chen, who wowed in this year’s Beijing games with a flawless performance of a lifetime, becoming the first American man to take home Gold since 2010. His ethereal long program was skated to a medley of Elton John’s tunes, most prominently “Rocket Man,” and the song legend took time out of his concert to give a shoutout to the Olympian this week. Pretty cool approbation.
"“It took on a new meaning when I watched the Winter Olympics this year,” Elton John said during the video, according to NBC Sports. “Professionalism, athleticism, just incredible. I was just so honored that he chose my song.”"
Nathan Chen’s not the only Olympian among the bunch, however. The roster of skaters also includes the Ice Dance Olympic Bronze medal team of Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue from this year’s Games. Joining them are the rest of the Olympic Team Silver winners Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier; Madison Chock and Evan Bates; Vincent Zhou; and Karen Chen.
The cast also features Olympic Bronze Medalist and U.S. Champion Jason Brown, 2022 U.S. Champion Mariah Bell, and Olympic Bronze Medalist and U.S. Champion Mirai Nagasu. Fan-favorite and Sochi Olympics Bronze Medalist Jason Brown will be skating a revamped version of his celebrated and artistically impressive “Sinnerman” routine (love that one).
It’s also the last chance to see the beautiful two-time U.S. Champion Alysa Liu, who just announced her retirement at the tender age of 16. Her graceful presence will be missed.
Stars on Ice features the skating superstars in a variety of individual and fun ensemble routines in a hugely popular show that has been around since Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton founded the tour in 1986. He’s still part of the creative team as a producer of the tour. Elton John’s stunning music features again in the finale grand performance, with skater Evan Bates wearing a Bob Mackie-designed coat—not to be missed—among other fabulous costumes inspired by the rock legend (hello! You had me at figure skating, and then Elton John).
The tour has been performing to standing ovations across the nation. The full Stars on Ice tour schedule, participating stars, and information can be found at StarsOnIce.com.
