Mindy Kaling offers Legally Blonde 3 production update
Elle Woods is back – soon.
The third installment of the 2001 film Legally Blonde was set for a May 2022 film. However, the film has seen many delays. While not much information has been released about the plot or production, Mindy Kaling, who is part of the writing team, has finally offered some new information.
In an interview with TIME, she stated that the film will find Elle Woods in her 40s and will acknowledge the period between the first film and the newest release. She stated that there has been a delay in production because she wants to do justice to the characters.
"“We don’t want to be responsible for ruining what’s basically Reese’s Avengers franchise. What is Elle Woods like at 42? Does she end up becoming all the things she wanted? How does that personality manifest in a grown woman? Has she become more cynical? Her brightness and her cheerfulness really worked when she was 22, but how has life changed her perspective on things? We’re not afraid of the character in this world, and we don’t feel we have to apologize for her. As a fan, I didn’t want to watch her be canceled or become a Karen. So the character is just fun. That’s what’s been interesting and challenging—and why it’s taking us such a long time to write.”"
The original film followed Elle Woods, portrayed by Reese Witherspoon, as she followed her boyfriend to Harvard Law School. While doing so, she overcame stereotypes, found herself, and found a new lover in Owen Wilson (who plays Emmett), and a friend in Paulette ( portrayed by Jennifer Coolidge). The success of the film spawned the spinoff Legally Blonde: Red, White & Blond. The film followed Elle’s career in Washington. While it was originally set as the final chapter in Elle’s story, Witherspoon announced the third installment in 2018.
