Growing up in a Latinx household, Jennifer Lopez was not as much of a big deal as you would expect. When her breakout role in “Selena” came, she became familiar to the greater population, but the Selena that I knew growing up was still Selena. And the Jennifer Lopez I grew up knowing as “Jenny from the Block” was the Jennifer Lopez I was becoming familiar with.

After movies became a part of the picture, she was as much as a Hollywood star to me as a Jennifer Aniston or an Angelina Jolie. I remember watching every film like “Maid in Manhattan” and “Shall We Dance?”.

So when it was announced that Jennifer Lopez was coming back to the big screen with another film, now set to star alongside Owen Wilson and Columbian singer Maluma, I knew I had to watch. With it being available to stream from home on Peacock, it was perfect. But, my viewing experience was different than I expected.

Watching “Marry Me” as a longtime Jennifer Lopez fan

Don’t get me wrong. I am a sucker for a great romance film – good and bad ones. And you might be reading this debating whether I’ve even watched any Jennifer Lopez films after saying this. But after watching “Marry Me”, it seemed like it was just another Jennifer Lopez film.

Sure – Lopez has had opportunities to break out of this “rags to riches”, “love conquers all” role in films like the 2000 horror film “The Cell” and even 2019’s “Hustlers”. But when will Lopez give us something new? I truly believe that when different roles are portrayed, more lives begin to change.

It’s not to say it was a bad film. The box office also said the same. But as Jennifer Lopez continues to shine, it’s time for her to take on different opportunities.
