Wait, what happened to the Christmas album Jennifer Lopez was supposed to release back in 2014?

These days, who hasn’t released a Christmas album? Mariah Carey is obviously the queen, and in the past few years, we’ve gotten new holiday music from the likes of Gwen Stefani, Sia, Dolly Parton, Meghan Trainor, and the list goes on.

Even Jennifer Lopez recently announced she was duetting with singer Stevie Mackey on “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” which made me realize something: J.Lo announced a Christmas album back in 2014 and it never happened.

This isn’t the first time J.Lo has teased something that never happened. You may recall, following her Super Bowl performance earlier in 2020, she announced she was hopping on a “RITMO” remix with the Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin. She posted a video teaser and everything. Then it never came out.

As far as the Christmas album goes, let’s take a trip back to March 2014. The singer did an interview for Rap-Up where she not only confirmed she was working on a Christmas album, but that she was working on it with superstar producer David Foster. She didn’t share many details about it, other than the fact that she was hoping to do a mix of both classics and originals.

She praised Foster as a producer, saying that he took some of the vocals they worked on together and turned it into an almost full-fledged Christmas song, and the two of them agreed they had to put together a full album. She did say, however, “ I don’t know if it’ll be for this year or next year, but I would love to.” Keep in mind, though, that this was over six years ago.

In Hollywood, projects are always in flux. There are so many things happening behind the scenes that we never even hear about that get completely trashed and never come out. But that’s the thing: We don’t hear about those. Once an artist talks about things that are in the works, they walk a fine line of risking it not happening.

This happens in the early stages of albums often. Producers and songwriters talk about working with certain artists for their upcoming projects, fans get excited, and then when the album comes out, their songs didn’t make the cut. It’s disappointing, but that’s how the business works.

All this really makes me realize, though, is how amazing a J.Lo Christmas album would be. She’s not usually known for big vocals or reserved, classical type songs, so it makes me wonder what type of album she would’ve done. Would she have gone very classic Christmas, covering songs like “O Holy Night” and “Little Drummer Boy,” or would she go upbeat, dance-y or even more sexy? Just imagine what J.Lo could bring to a song like “Santa Baby” or even “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”!

Who knows if this mysterious Christmas album will ever see the light of day. After more than six years now, it doesn’t seem likely. But hey, Jennifer Lopez is thriving and her career has never been hotter, with movie roles, TV shows, new music, and even her skincare line, JLo Beauty. She doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, so she has plenty of time to get us the holiday music we would love from her. Plus, the holiday spectacular she would put on alone would be worth the wait!
