It’s the month of love and if you are reading this today, it’s Valentine’s Day. But if you lived in the world back in February 2002, the world belonged to “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton. The song, originally titled “Interlude”, is the song that talks about yearning for someone in any way possible. It’s a happy love song that became an anthem at karaoke bars, parties, couples, and everyone in between.

It is one of the most recognizable pop songs of the early 2000s. While the song not only has easy to sing to lyrics, the story is one that everyone can relate to. Who could forget the melodic piano riff that carries through the entire song? Here’s more about the hit single.

Why everyone still loves this Vanessa Carlton mega-hit

While the song’s topic is something that everyone can relate to, it also has a real-life story that makes it even more relatable. Vanessa wrote the song about a crush she had while studying at Julliard who went on to become a famous actor. “I can’t say the person’s name because they are a famous actor and I don’t want to say it…. I’m purposefully, I’m not attaching a gender and it will remain like that,” she told Entertainment Tonight. It adds to the realism of the song.

Because of that, it is no surprise that it had three Grammy nominations and hit number one on the US Top 40 charts and the Adult Contemporary charts. It also charted around the world and was the inspiration for multiple other pop culture moments like Terry Crews’ sing-along in the movie White Chicks.

With it being such an earworm, it is bound to remain a classic for years to come.
