Instagram is testing a paid subscription model in the U.S.
Social media is everywhere nowadays and Instagram is no different. As of late 2021, Instagram had 960 million users. While Instagram is a free downloadable application for mobile users, it has just been announced that is testing a paid subscription model in the U.S. Here is what you need to know if you are currently on the platform as a user.
Instagram’s potential model for the new year
Instagram is currently testing its new tiered model with a limited number of creators that include basketball player Sedona Prince, Olympian Jordan Chiles, and astrologer Aliza Kelly. The model allows fans to subscribe to creators that will offer exclusive stories, content, and Instagram lives. By doing so, fans will pay a monthly fee ranging from $9.99 to $99.99. The cost will be set by the creator. Fans will also get a “purple badge” that will label their status to fellow fans and creators. Instagram also announced that it will not take a portion of subscription revenues until 2023.
While it might come as a surprise to see a subscription model announced for Instagram, Instagram head Adam Mosseri mentioned in a video that many social media platforms are following the same model. Twitter introduced Super Follows in 2021 and social media creators continue to use platforms like Patreon and Substack.
Because they announced that it is in the early testing stages of its paid subscription model, it is too early to tell whether users will be a fan of its new integration. As a loyal user, it seems like it is something that is not needed. Other platforms like Patreon are already available. Too much does exist. With user numbers continuing to rise, however, I might be proven wrong. We’ll have to wait to see what they announce next!
What do you think about the new venture? Do you agree with their next steps? Sound off below. We would love to hear from you.
