Warning: This post contains spoilers from the season premiere of A Discovery of Witches.

The first episode of the third and final season of A Discovery of Witches, the television series based on the novels by Deborah Harkness, has already set the stage for what will be the final major showdown. And Peter Knox (portrayed by Owen Teale) will be leading the charge.

After killing Diana Bishop’s aunt, Emily (played by Valerie Pettiford), Knox faced disciplinary action from the Congregation which only made the head of the de Clermont family, Baldwin, too happy. Knox was kicked out of the Congregation and off the island. But he promised retribution which has been on his mind since the series began.

Diana (Teresa Palmer) spent several months in 16th century London where she practiced her witchcraft and learned how to do more with her powers. Now, she’s ready to use those powers to destroy the witch who killed her parents and her aunt. She has promised to “make Knox pay.”

Gerbert d’Aurillac, a particularly nasty vampire played by Trevor Eve, will side with Knox as he is eager to vanquish the de Clermonts and seize the power of the Congregation. Though we can expect to see a battle between Knox and Diana, Gerbert may end up facing the entire de Clermont family, including Matthew and Ysabeau as Marcus is seen in the trailer saying “if they take on one of us, they take on all of us.”

As A Discovery of Witches draws to a close (only six episodes remain), we’ll finally see the showdown that has been building for the past two seasons. With Diana fully into her power, she will be a virtually unstoppable force, and Matthew (Matthew Goode) has already said he would walk through the blood of kings and queens to protect her. There is a battle coming, and it’s going to be epic.
