Merry Swiftmas: Ranking Taylor Swift’s Christmas songs
It seems like every good country singer releases a Christmas album at some point and Taylor Swift’s Christmas tunes are a strong reminder of that. We’ve ranked all of her Christmas songs for your holiday listening!
Taylor Swift released “The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection,” an album containing four covers of popular holiday songs and two original songs, in October 2007. The album came in between her debut album and “Fearless” and reflects the country sound of her early years. Meanwhile, Taylor released the single “Christmas Tree Farm” in December 2019, alongside a music video featuring home videos of her childhood on her parents’ Christmas tree farm.
7. White Christmas
The worst part of ranking a set of songs that are all great is choosing one to be last. While Taylor’s rendition of this Christmas classic is lovely, it’s the track out of all seven that stands out the least. Still, it’s a solid choice if you’re looking for a cover of this song other than Bing Crosby’s.
6. Santa Baby
Taylor gives a bouncy version of “Santa Baby,” the flirty and fun Christmas song. There’s nothing that sets it particularly apart from other versions of the song, but it’s a nice addition to Taylor’s Christmas album.
5. Christmas Must Be Something More
The first of the original songs on this list, “Christmas Must Be Something More,” is a song about the real meaning of the holiday season. It’s one of the most country songs Taylor has ever made, both in theme and sound. It’s a sweet song and Taylor referring to Jesus as the “birthday boy” always makes me giggle a little bit.
4. Silent Night
Fans have pointed out that Taylor’s voice has gotten better as it matured with age, but her version of “Silent Night” shows that she had impressive vocals even in her teen years. This is a unique and earnest reimagining of the song that stands apart from other versions.
3. Christmas Tree Farm
Taylor grew up on a Christmas tree farm in Pennsylvania before moving to Nashville to pursue her music career and this song harkens back to her roots. It’s an upbeat and cheerful original Christmas tune that’s a great addition to the same set of songs we hear over and over every year.
2. Last Christmas
“Last Christmas” is one of my favorite holiday songs and Taylor’s is my favorite version of it. This song of a love gone wrong fits so well into Taylor’s catalog, especially in her early years when she’d released songs like “Teardrops on My Guitar” and “A Perfectly Good Heart” not long before.
1. Christmases When You Were Mine
Of course, the number one spot had to go to one of Taylor’s original holiday songs, and “Christmases When You Were Mine” is the most memorable of the three. It captures the melancholy feeling of going through the holiday season after breaking up with a partner and realizing that you won’t be experiencing it with them this year.
