Nancy Drew took on multiple characters’ sorrows in “The Burning of the Sorrows”
When it comes to Nancy Drew, the series is never shy about doing a deep dive into hard and sensitive topics. And in the eighth episode of Season 3, “The Burning of the Sorrows,” Nancy Drew once again touched on some deep-seated issues for many of our characters.
While Nancy, Bess, Park, and Temperance had to deal with an actual Sorrow monster, Ace and Ryan were dealing with a paranormal entity locking them in at the historical society. And that doesn’t even take into account the fact that George was on the hunt for a missing Ned, while a former friend of Ned’s has shown up in town (looking for help and with a rather interesting connection to Ned).
In “The Burning of the Sorrows,” a Sorrow monster meant that Temperance, Bess, Park, and Nancy found themselves each having to confront their pasts and the things that have caused their hearts to break. And while we don’t learn until the very end that Temperance was intentionally infected by the Sorrow monster to get what she wants, at one point we learn more about this character than we ever expected.
Nancy Drew dives into the hurts of multiple characters in the eighth episode of Season 3
While we have long had an idea of the things that have hurt both Nancy and Bess, it was interesting to learn more about both Temperance and Park. From what inspired Park to become a profiler (who doesn’t carry a gun) to the pain of Temperance’s daughter being taken away from her and even having her soul split, things were painful for the people in Temperance’s home spilling their pain for a monster to consume.
But they were not the only ones having to confront things about themselves. And that is where Ace and Ryan come into the picture. With these two trapped in a room in the Historical Society, we got to see them connecting and having to face their issues, even if it was more Ace dealing with his insecurities over Ryan doing this.
I will say, it was interesting having Ace call out Ryan for living on the Drew household couch. But at the same time, Ryan wasn’t letting Ace call him out and instead told him to stop pushing his doubts, insecurities, and whatever issues he has with Nancy onto him. It was a strong moment for the show, where we got to see that Ryan isn’t a pushover and sees that there are issues with Ace and Nancy. Plus, it let us see just how Ace is handling all the changes in his life (hint: he’s not).
“The Burning of the Sorrows” was a fascinating look into more painful topics for the Drew Crew, while also adding another member to the team thanks to Park being included in the metaphysical mysteries of it all.
But what did you think of this episode of Nancy Drew? Were you as invested in the sorrows as we were? Were you surprised by anything that went down in episode 8? We want to know.
