The L Word: Generation Q season 2 episode 7 review: Fear the backslide
Season two of The L Word: Generation Q is winding down following the aftermath of Sophie and Dani’s disastrous non-nuptials.
Last week’s episode saw multiple relationships come to a head with karaoke night at Dana’s as Sophie and Finley finally got together and Shane and Tess came to a new understanding in their relationship. With more relationship drama to unpack, let’s dive into this week’s episode.
The L Word: Generation Q: A few too many
This week’s episode finds everyone converging at Dana’s once again for a poker charity night–thankfully they’re finally learning to really go all-in on this trope like the original series. With plenty of drinks flowing, things get messy quickly.
After her connection with Tom last week, Alice has a surprising reunion with Nat. While they try to insist it’s casual, Nat subtly behaves like they’re a couple again until Alice finally puts a stop to it, reminding them both of why it didn’t work in the first place.
Meanwhile, with Tina out of pocket, Carrie decides to show up and make an effort with Bette. I’ve mentioned how good of an addition Rosie O’Donnell is to this season, and her acting skills shine in this episode, between the cute moment of “gay talk show host” banter with Alice, and her subtle friendship with Shane.
No matter how hard Carrie tries, though, Bette won’t give her even an inch, leading Carrie to painfully confess she feels like she’s back in high school with the mean girls. And Bette is certainly acting like it, even though she refuses to see it.
As the night progresses and Carrie slams the drinks back with no one there to help her stay in control, she’s thoroughly sauced by the end of the night, leaving Shane and Tess to take care of her.
Sidebar: it’s interesting that Shane is the only one who seems to have the right attitude about Carrie. She loves Tina and therefore is looking out for her, but also looking out for Carrie. Whether the rest of them are too self-involved or too afraid of Bette remains to be seen.
Shane and Tess deposit Carrie at home as a rainstorm begins to overtake the night. Thanks to Bette, Carrie’s self-esteem has taken such a nosedive, she tearfully admits she’s unsure whether she can still marry Tina.
As they leave, Shane thanks Tess for her help, and Tess kisses her! Finally! What a slow burn payoff. Let’s see what happens with these two next and whether Shane will let herself be happy.
Meanwhile, Sophie and Finley are hot and heavy in the honeymoon phase. While Finley is desperate to prove her worth to Sophie, Sophie is subtly testing the waters to see if Finley is serious enough to go the long haul.
Both of them are drinking way too much to compensate for their insecurities in the relationship and Finley’s alcoholism is a ticking time bomb. As they leave Dana’s, Finley assures Sophie she’s good to drive, though she definitely isn’t. And Sophie only makes matters worse by getting a little too handsy, leading to the two getting pulled over by the police…
The L Word: Generation Q: What else happened this week?
After thoroughly devastating Carrie, Bette focuses her attention on Pippa, the two finally hooking up after hours in an art exhibit. Some things never change with Bette Porter.
Meanwhile, Angie’s girlfriend, Jordi, has been seemingly kind of self-centered lately as Angie has been navigating the emotional discovery of her donor’s identity and illness. Jordi seems to not care very much when Angie talks about it, leading Angie to decide she wants to break up with her.
…until Jordi stages an elaborate promposal. Let’s hope it’s a sign that Jordi does genuinely care, and not another red flag.
