Wave your flag high, Britney Spears fans! According to the latest news in the Britney conservatorship drama, her father Jamie Spears has agreed to step down. CNN reported on the news earlier this week, giving us a better look at the legal actions that were taken.

Let’s quickly get up to speed on what’s happened so far. In 2019, the #FreeBritney movement began to gain mainstream attention. After the pop idol had been locked in a conservatorship for over a decade, fans were tipped off that the singer was being held in a psychiatric hospital against her will and banned from driving after not taking her medication. The podcast Britney’s Gram started the hashtag #FreeBritney and fans rallied behind it.

Cut to 2021, the Free Britney movement has gotten even louder. Thanks to her fans for continually trying to bring the issues going on behind the scenes to the mass media – more and more began to learn about it and support the outcry from her fans. Once a leak of a court hearing was released to the public, we all learned that Spears wanted to remove her father from the conservatorship, get a new lawyer and hopefully get the conservatorship removed.

The conservatorship was supposed to end in 2009, why was it still going on? Why is Britney not being paid for her albums and shows like she’s supposed to? Why is the singer’s every movement monitored as though she’ll kill someone? Wait a minute, the conservatorship forced an IUD in her and hasn’t allowed her to get married? These were the questions people were asking.

Britney Spears father, Jamie, confirms his intent to stand down as her estate’s conservator

On a side note, I also believe that this was a moment of self-reflection for many people. The reason the star was put in the conservatorship in the first place was because the media kept hounding her in her most intimate and highly emotional moments, causing her to snap. Essentially, we put her there and now we’re stunned that she’s still there. It’s almost like the media and public put her there and then forgot about her.

The latest news seems to suggest that James “Jamie” Spears, father of Spears and conservator of her estate, is willing to step down, making it a huge win for Team Britney. In the counter letter sent from Jamie’s attorney, the following was said.

"“There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate…it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests. Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests. So even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator.”"

Frankly, I think Jamie can shove it. He’s been micromanaging this adult woman’s life for over a decade and taking her money. Enough is enough. Hopefully, this will continue to bring good news for the singer as a new conservator is named and a legal process can continue for much fewer restrictions on her life. I’m still horrified by that IUD news.

Lynne Spears, the mother of Britney, had entered the conservatorship about 3 years ago to try to help her daughter. In a statement to US Weekly, her lawyer spoke about her ex-husband’s potential removal. “Lynne Spears is pleased Jamie has agreed to step down. Lynne entered into this conservatorship to protect her daughter almost three years ago. She has accomplished what she set out to do. She will have no further comment.”

Hopefully, this means that Britney and her mother can get some control back in her life and continue her successful career as a free woman.
