The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air reboot pushed to 2022
It looks like the flight to Bel-Air has been delayed. The highly-anticipated NBC reboot of the popular 1990’s NBC sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which starred Will Smith, Alfonso Ribeiro, and the late James Avery has been pushed back to a premiere date of 2022.
The reboot, appropriately titled Bel-Air, will stream on NBC’s platform, Peacock. The official synopsis describes the series as follows.
"A serialized one-hour dramatic analog of the ’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that leans into the original premise: Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. With a reimagined vision, Bel-Air will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions, and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show.”"
The reason for the delay is that original showrunners Chris Collins and Diane Houston have stepped down from their respective roles. They will be replaced by Rasheed Newson and TJ Brady, who have writing credits on a string of television productions including CW’s The 100, and Lifetime’s Army Wives. Bel-Air will be their first project as showrunners.
Bel-Air will be a serialized one-hour drama, a change from its original, more comedy-oriented predecessor, and is based on Morgan Cooper’s 2019 trailer, Bel-Air. Cooper will serve as director, co-writer, and executive producer. Will Smith has taken on the role of executive producer. There are currently no casting updates for the series, which Peacock already picked up for two seasons back in September 2020.
Last November, the original cast came together for The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’s 30th reunion. Smith, along with Karyn Parsons, Tatyana Ali, Daphne Maxwell Reid, Ribeiro, Geoffrey Marcell, and the first and original Aunt Viv, Janet Hubert reflected on their memories from the iconic show. Additionally, a special tribute was made to James Avery (Uncle Phil) who passed away in 2013.
All six seasons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the reunion special are available to stream on HBO Max
