Suicide Squad member: Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie’s loveable chaos creator is going to be so great to see again after her last appearance in Birds of Prey. Due in part to the character’s large success in DC Media, her Harley Quinn was one of if not the most popular Halloween outfits in 2016. Despite it being incredibly sexist – I mean, sparkly underwear and a cut-off shirt? Come on, now. Even though this film is also constructed around a male gaze, it seems James Gunn is determined to do better by Harley.

Fans loved the character so much that they even made a spin-off film starring the clown princess of crime. Birds of Prey featured Harley breaking up with Joker and going off on her own for the first time. Later the Harley Quinn animated series – featuring a similar premise, though a lot more raunchy – debuted on the short-lived DC Universe streaming service, before moving to HBO Max.

All of that being said, it would be incredibly foolish to end her story here when there’s such potential down the line for more appearances and franchises. Or at least more Birds of Prey movies. Please. On that alone, I think Harley will live to see another day. However, I think she’ll be getting her fair share of close calls in The Suicide Squad.
