Cursed gets canned after a single season on Netflix
By Erin Lynch
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Netflix adaptation Cursed has been slashed from the streaming service. After only one season, the King Arthur retelling from the minds of Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler has been canceled.
Debuting in July of 2020, the show came and went without much fanfare from critics or audiences. The ten-episode first season followed Nimue (played by Katherine Langford) as she quested to safeguard the Sword of Power, find Merlin, and save her people. Those who know their Arthurian legend would know that Nimue is the name of the Lady in the Lake, who gifted King Arthur with the magical sword Excalibur.
Cursed is a bit of a feminine twist on the story in a not-so-overdone way. Especially given that it was originally written by men. While it was filled with gorgeous imagery, interesting characters, and strong ideas, the show failed to deliver much interest to viewers outside of its active fanbase.
Which is a shame really because it had potential to be a very cool take on the legend. However, it only earned a 67% Fresh rating overall on RottenTomatoes. Which isn’t the worst but it appears Netflix didn’t want to spend more money on the series.
Fans will be left to wonder how the television series would have continued. While they can always turn to the original graphic novel, the ones who only watched the show will have to ponder the questions left open at the end. Such as, what happened to Nimue? How is Morgana going to step into her role as the Widow? Will Lancelot and Percival ever reconnect with the group? There are so many unanswered questions!
Cursed was only able to survive one season on Netflix.
It’s also disappointing to see another female-led series disappearing from the streamer. Media has made strides to bring a more diverse range of voices, including women, to the screen. There’s still a long way to go, however and it’s always a bummer to see them not succeed. Hopefully it’s just making the way for more content with female voices, yeah?
