HBO Max’s flashy reboot of The CW’s classic Gossip Girl is finally here. Based on what we know so far, it’s difficult to discern why the reboot is necessary or what makes it different from the original.
Regardless, we’re here for more rich teens fighting in the trashiest way possible.
Per IMDB, the synopsis for the first episode, “Just Another Girl on the MTA,” reads:
"As the school year begins for New York’s elite, a new student at Constance St. Jude’s finds herself thrust into the spotlight, while a mysterious presence threatens to shake the status quo."
Based on the synopsis alone, it seems like this series will pick up almost directly where its predecessor left off, following new students attending the same school that Serena and Blair did.

While the original series’ Gossip Girl utilized the early days of cell phones and texting to communicate, one notable update to the reboot seen in the above trailer is Gossip Girl’s reintroduction via Instagram.
Seeing socialites and the “rich kids” of Constance Billard in the world of social media will be an interesting update. Additionally, the characters also appear to be more racially and sexually diverse.
But the reboot appears to be vying for many similarities to the original, including evoking the iconic Met Steps. The question is, how much is simply a rehash versus a reinvention?
