We can officially say it: The Gossip Girl reboot is heading to HBO Max this year. What are some questions we have about the upcoming series?

Good morning, Upper East Siders. With the big news that HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot is heading our way this year, our curiosity has been piqued. And although Dan Humphrey may be the best at sniffing out a new story, we’ve got a few burning questions of our own.

We’ve already spotted a new cast sitting on the steps of the Met, and they sound like they’ll be intriguing additions to New York City’s gossip mill. Kristen Bell will also return to voice Gossip Girl, but this reboot will be focusing on a whole new generation.

So, what questions do we have heading into the reboot of this beloved series?

How will Gossip Girl be shown in the reboot?

The premise of the original Gossip Girl kept our anonymous source of New York City’s rumor mill heavily involved, but we don’t know how “Gossip Girl” will return for the reboot. It’s unlikely to be Dan Humphrey this time around, but clearly someone else has taken up the mantle. There’s also the question of how Gossip Girl will share his or her information with the world. After all, we’re looking at a more modern series this time around — the setup could very well reflect that.

One way for Gossip Girl to make her — or his — moves is through an anonymous Twitter account where people can DM Gossip Girl to offer tips. Perhaps Gossip Girl even has a Patreon now, where donors are given shout-outs occasionally. Another way Gossip Girl could be implemented is through TikTok. It could be an account where people send in their videos with the juiciest details.

Will any of the original cast make a cameo?

Nothing is certain yet, but fans know that various OG Gossip Girl stars, like Chace Crawford and Kelly Rutherford, have said that they would be open to the idea of returning for the reboot. Since the new show is set eight years after the original, it would be great if they could make a surprise cameo in an episode. After all, the OG Gossip Girl had celebrity cameos like Hilary Duff, so it’s not that far-fetched that one or more of the original stars would make an appearance.

Fans already know that the OG designer, Eric Daman, is back for the reboot, as is Kristen Bell. Perhaps more familiar faces will join on before the series is through.

Who are the characters we’ll be following?

In case you missed it, the cast for the reboot includes: Emily Alyn Lind, Whitney Peak, Eli Brown, Jonathan Fernandez, Jason Gotay, Adam Chanler-Berat, Tavi Gevinson, Zion Moreno, and Thomas Doherty. Newcomer Savannah Smith will also have a lead role. Smith is currently studying acting at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Recently, the stars of the series shared which characters they’ll be playing and some small hints about who those characters are. Overall, though, we don’t know much about our new group of elite New Yorkers. Hopefully, they’ll be every bit as compelling as the other Upper East Siders fans came to know and love. Fingers crossed.

What is the new show’s premise?

This show is set eight years later after Dan’s website was shut down. It focuses on a new group of teens and it will address how social media has a major influence on their lives. Other than that, the plot has mostly been kept under wraps.

Will the series have an identical premise to the OG show, or will it switch things up a bit? That’s a question unlikely to be answered until the series debuts — or at least until we get a full-length trailer.

What topics should the reboot tackle?

The original Gossip Girl tackled family drama, scandals, eating disorders, and even death. It would be interesting to see what real-world issues are discussed in the reboot.  Will COVID-19 be mentioned at all? What about protests and activism? It would be cool to see if the news is spread on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok.
