Best movie musicals: Hairspray
If there is one thing we can say about Hairspray, it is that the story has a way of making you laugh, think, and appreciate a hint of romance. The fact that there have been a few different versions of this musical makes it hard to pick just one that we love, but the 2007 movie starring Christopher Walken, John Travolta, Queen Latifah, James Marsden, Zac Efron, and so many more amazing actors makes this one a definite winner.
Not only is the cast amazing, but the story itself is still important. While Hairspray might be about a girl getting her big break, it is also a story of racism, segregation, and being judged for the way you look.
The fact that we get to see Travolta in drag, acting as the mother of our leading lady definitely cements this musical’s place on our list too.
Of course, the music is another important aspect of this story, with a few different songs resonating with audiences. Among the songs that stick out from this movie, we have “The Nicest Kids in Town,” “(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs,” and “Without Love.” In fact, these three songs are some of our favorites because of how singable they are. And not only that, but they also deliver some interesting messages.
Hairspray might be one of those musicals that just never falls out of favor because of how important the story is in terms of fighting intolerance.
