Underrated queer show: Good Trouble

Platform: Freeform

Cast: Maia Mitchell, Cierra Ramirez, Zuri Adele, Sherry Cola, Tommy Martinez, Emma Hunton, Josh Pence

Premise: A spin-off of the Freeform show The Fosters, Good Trouble takes place a few years after the original show’s finale and finds sisters Callie (Mitchell) and Mariana (Ramirez) moving to Los Angeles to begin the next phase of their young adult lives. The two move into a communal apartment building called the Coterie, which is already full of colorful residents.

Good Trouble isn’t just an updated Melrose Place, though there is plenty of drama and steamy sex scenes. Martinez plays an openly bisexual artist named Gael who has relationships with both men and women throughout the course of the series. Gael’s sister, Jazmin, is a trans woman and a recurring character played by trans actress Hailie Sahar.

Cola portrays Alice Kwan, the building manager, who is also a lesbian. While Cola’s character is oftentimes used as comedic relief (her character is an aspiring stand-up comedian), it’s the storylines of her dealing with her conservative parents and the tribulations of being a lesbian trying to have a serious relationship in a digital hookup-fueled dating pool that bring the character to life.

Two seasons are currently available on Freeform and Hulu, with the second half of season 3 slated to premiere later this summer, so there’s plenty of time to catch up before the men and women of the Coterie return.
