Underrated queer show: Love, Victor

Platform: Hulu

Cast: Michael Cimino, George Sear, Rachel Hilson, Bebe Wood, Anthony Turpel, Mason Gooding, Ana Ortiz

Premise: Love, Victor is the small screen spin-off of the hit 2018 film, Love, Simonwhich was the first gay rom-com produced by a mainstream studio. Love, Victor takes place in the same world as the original film, meaning that the character of Victor Salazar (Cimino) enrolls in the same high school Simon attended, Creekwood High School.

As the new kid at school who is struggling to fit in, Victor is also adjusting to his family moving to Atlanta from Texas, while struggling with his sexual orientation as well. The storytelling is remarkably detailed for a “teen show,” with each character having both their own individual identities, while also contributing to the overall story of Victor’s journey of self-discovery. There’s not a weak link in the cast, with each actor holding their own in scenes ranging from the hilarious to heartbreaking.

Victor is a flawed character, who doesn’t always make the right choices throughout the season, but members of the LGBT community will sympathize with most of Victor’s actions as he tries to figure out who he is and who he likes. The first season comes to an end with Victor coming to terms with his sexuality and coming out to his religious parents. Luckily for us, season two is right around the corner, so we won’t have to wait long to see the next chapter in Victor’s life.
