The brilliance of Nancy Drew is in its storytelling. While people who grew up with the books might take issue with some of the liberties the writers have taken with this character and her mystery-solving, the reality is that this series has done something special – they have given us a cast of flawed characters that we can relate to.

While we may not deal with the supernatural on a daily basis or even a murderous billionaire who ends up being our paternal grandfather, that doesn’t mean we can’t relate to Nancy, Ace, George, Ned, Bess, and even Ryan and Carson. Every single one of these characters brings something to the table that enriches the series in any number of ways.

And that was never more clear than in the Season 2 finale of Nancy DrewThe Echo of Lost Tears. Not only were we treated to an emotional rollercoaster, but we also got moments that were beautiful and even heartbreaking.

Nancy’s life might have been on the line, but for us, it was our mental well-being we needed to be on the lookout for. Not only did we have to watch as Nancy was nearly drained of blood to discover how to save herself, but even Bess had a traumatic goodbye as Odette decided to step back and let George live out her final years in relative peace. From Nancy’s near-death experience to Bess having to let go of a love not meant to be, this episode was all about the emotional impact.

The Echo of Lost Tears is Nancy Drew at its emotional best

There is something to be said for going on a supernatural journey of discovery through the psyche. And for Nancy Drew, that meant realizing just how important our trauma is to who we become as people. But that’s not all she learned. Because there was more to this journey than understanding why our past is so important to our present and our future.

When it comes to the relationships Nancy Drew has cultivated over the course of the last two seasons, this journey of self-discovery also reminded her that her friends are just as important to who she is and who she has become as anything else in her past.

Then we have Ryan Hudson and Carson Drew. These two men are vastly different and yet they have one thing in common above all else – they are Nancy’s fathers. Whether we look at Ryan as her biological father or Carson as the man who raised her, these two men are each her dad in their own way. And what we saw in The Echo of Lost Tears was the culmination of a profound journey that has left us with these two men learning how they can be there for their daughter, even as their roles in her life are not set in stone.

The Echo of Lost Tears was brilliant and it was a perfect send-off for a season that was equal parts compelling and mysterious. We still have so much to learn about this town and these people, and we know there is more supernatural chaos coming our way. But for now, it is all about how this show was able to do something truly stunning with an hour of TV.
