Summer TV: High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America

Platform: Netflix

Release Date: May 26

Cast: Stephen Satterfield (host)

Premise: This Netflix docu-series follows chef and writer Stephen Satterfield as he traces the delicious, moving culinary throughlines from Africa to Texas. The four-part series dives into the major role that African-American culture has had in the creation of what we know today as American food. High on the Hog shines a well-needed light on the history of Black food, which has often been white-washed over time.

Satterfield is also the founder of the food and culture magazine Whetstone and based the docu-series on Dr. Jessica B. Harris’s culinary history book High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey From Africa to America, which was published in 2011. Dr. Harris, who is also a journalist herself who has previously published multiple cookbooks, will appear alongside Satterfield throughout the cultured lesson on barbecue, stews, and more.
