Podcasts to escape with: Unhappy Hour with Matt Bellassai

This podcast is a whole treat!  Matt Bellasai started out working for BuzzFeed as a humor writer and developed a series called Whine About It, where he drinks wine and rants about the annoying parts of life.

Unhappy Hour is a place where Matt rants about life while drinking, alongside his producer Bari Finkle. He has different segments. First is Worst Things First, where he talks about ridiculous news stories where humans act the worst. There is a subsection called Only in Florida where Matt makes fun of stories where Floridians make dumb, embarrassing choices.

The next section is Deep Dive, where Matt rants about things that annoy him like shaving, entire cities, and the fact that Sandy from SpongeBob lives in the ocean. When Matt gets really passionate about his rants his nasal voice rises and he becomes sassier. He judges popular things people like and his observance of the weirdness of these acceptable things is enjoyable to hear. There is also something comforting about being able to complain. We are often told to think positively and be happy, but Unhappy Hour shows us there is a place and time to complain. There is value in it.

Matt also interviews guests who are internet influencers, comedians, writers, and podcast hosts. They talk about the content they are working on and Matt gives them the time to rant about annoying things in their lives. The podcast ends with Bari and Matt’s chaser, TV, life, or hobby things that are bringing them joy. A sweet ending to a hyper, exciting show.
